Yoga mats are excellent camping equipment! They keep your yoga workout going on the go and offer to cushion and support your body. They absorb sweat and release it back to the environment. So you stay cool and dry, and most importantly… they are all-terrain… they won’t lose their flexibility even when wet. But can I use a yoga mat for camping?

Before going to the topic “Can I use a yoga mat for camping?”. Let’s discuss the yoga mat first.

What is a Yoga Mat?

Yoga mats are designed to help you stretch and strengthen your muscles. They are great for home practice, but what if you want to take your workouts on the road? Most people don’t think to bring their yoga mats when they hit the gym or go on a vacation because they assume it will be challenging to find a place to use one. But that is not true anymore. There are now yoga mats for camping. They are lightweight, compact, and easy to use. All you have to do is unroll it and lie down on it.

Now let’s jump to the main point. If you can use a yoga mat for camping?

It depends on how you are going to use the yoga mat on your camping trip. If you are going to do some outdoor exercise while camping, you can use a yoga mat. Just pack your yoga mat, and you are good to go.

You might think that it’s not possible, but there is actually no reason why you shouldn’t do so!

You Can do all kinds of exercise while you are on vacation or on a camping trip! Just find a flat surface put down your yoga mat, and start yoga exercise.

But if you want to know if you can use your yoga mat as a sleeping pad. Let’s dig in about that.

Naturally, you cannot use your yoga mat as a sleeping pad unless you will unroll it first. But that’s not what we are talking about here. We are talking about using it as an exercise mat. In this case, you should be able to use your mat. However, if you intend to use your mat as a sleeping pad, read below.

Things to Keep in Mind for Using a Yoga Mat for Camping Bed

As you know, the best way to prevent getting sick when you are on a camping trip is by always taking the proper measures to protect yourself from the outside elements. And one of those is making sure you have a comfortable place to lay your head at night. And another is exercise. But what if you are unable to do either of these two things? Well, then, using a yoga mat as a bed can be a very viable option. Just remember to keep the following points in mind when using a yoga mat as a camping mat:

Insulation

Keep in mind that while it is true that a yoga mat has some sort of padding on the bottom, it is not a very thick layer of padding, and it will still compress under pressure. Therefore, if you intend to use your mat as a sleeping pad, you should make sure you have something under the area where you will lay your head. This could be a lightweight air mattress or simply some additional insulation like self-inflating pads.

Yoga mats tend to come in thicker than most sleeping pads. This means that they offer more excellent protection against cold temperatures. However, because they are thinner, they don’t insulate as a traditional sleeping pad does.

Portability

As we stated earlier, the primary reason people buy a yoga mat in the first place is for their portability. However, that does not mean you should throw your mat in the trunk of your car and take it with you wherever you go. Instead, you should make sure you have a nice clean place to put your mat away when you are finished using it. If possible, get a mat that has a carrying case that you can put the mat in when you are done. Cleanliness Obviously, you should make sure your camping area is clean before using your yoga mat as an air mattress.

Comfort

While it is true that a yoga mat has some sort of padding on the bottom, it is not a very thick layer of padding, and it will still compress under pressure. Therefore, if you intend to use your mat as air mattresses, you should make sure you have something under the area where you will lay your head.

What Is The Difference Between a Yoga Mat and a Camping Mattress?

Surprisingly enough, there is a very substantial difference. It has to do with the materials used to make each type of mat. Let’s take a look at what materials are used to make each type of mat and which are better pads for camping.

Yoga Mat

An average yoga mat is made out of one or more layers of natural rubber. The top layer is called the “topcoat”, which gives the mat its non-slip properties. The bottom layer is called the “substrate”, and this is what actually provides the padding. In most cases, the topcoat is a hard, non-compressible material, and the substrate is a soft, flexible material. This combination offers both traction and padding for your feet.

Camping Mats

Camping pads or mattress is also made out of one or more layers of natural rubber. However, unlike yoga mats, camping pads have no “topcoat” at all. Instead, the bottom layer is made out of some sort of synthetic foam. This combination provides the only traction and offers little or no padding at all for your sleeping area or sleeping bags. In addition, because they lack any kind of cushioning, they tend to sag over time.

Is sleeping on a Yoga Mat Good for You?

Yet, many people who purchase a yoga mat do not use it for its intended purpose. They use it instead as a regular bed or as a place to sleep on the floor. This causes many problems because a yoga mat is not designed to be used as a standard bed or as a place to sleep on the floor.

Therefore, if you decide to use your yoga mat this way, you will experience a lot of discomfort. You will put a considerable amount of pressure on the natural material beneath where you are laying your head.

This will cause the substrate to compress. In time, it will break down and become very uncomfortable and even dangerous.

Another problem with using a yoga mat this way is that it will cause your feet to sweat. When you sleep on a wet surface, you will eventually wake up with a soggy mattress. Not only that, the natural materials used to make a yoga mat have a tendency to absorb moisture from the air.

Conclusion

So, at last, we can say that using a yoga mat for sleeping is not as good as using a sleeping pad for camping. I highly recommend buying a sleeping pad for camping. But if it is for one or two days, you can try to use a yoga pad with some padding.

I have used them both, and they are very different in their uses. A yoga mat will be more comfortable than the ground but less so than a foam mattress. It’s also much harder on your knees when lying down.
